International HR Benchmarking Kick-Off next round in November 2010
International aspects of personnel management are becoming increasingly important. At the same time a strong, evidentiary and resilient basis for decision-making is necessary in order to enable optimization processes and ideas.
Until recently, solid international benchmarks were too difficult to be implemented due to a lack of standards. But not anymore: in 2008 Baumgartner & Partner conducted with 10 international companies for 14 countries (with a focus on Europe, but including also the US and selected Asian countries) a pilot scheme on the basis of a focused benchmarking model. For the first time, an objectified international comparison was possible regarding different HR organizations and added-value models, their service offerings and IT advisory service, along with a knowledge exchange of country-specific best practices.
The positive feedback of the participants led to the decision to conduct an international benchmarking of the HR Function on a regular basis with growing numbers of participants: in 2009’s run 22 global players participated in the benchmarking exercise, in 2010 even more participants are expected.
On average a benchmarking process takes around four months. At the beginning of each process a detailed discussion is organized regarding content and structure: thus, all companies can actively shape the layout of the benchmarking study.
In order to ensure an outcome beyond plain figures and KPIs, the importance of knowledge exchange between participating companies is highlighted. This contributes greatly to a better understanding of 'the story behind the figures' and encourages an exchange of best practices. Baumgartner attaches great value to this feature of the benchmarking process where two intensive one and a half day workshops are conducted concerning benchmarking results and evaluation.
Participant’s view:
'The International HR Benchmarking study of Baumgartner provides a good platform to identify best practices for HR Excellence. The easy to use web-survey tool helps a lot to reduce the usual burden of collecting benchmark data in an international environment. Baumgartner has done an excellent job in supporting the data collection and analysis process around the world. The closing session with all companies that participated in the survey added a lot of value in understanding the benchmark results.'(Nico Orie, Philips)
